Clusters of shallow lakes, eutrophic fertile ponds, and winding rivers with connecting lowland reservoirs and elevated lakes characterize the fishing opportunities of Northern Illinois in the areas surrounding Chicago in Lake County, McHenry County, Will County, DeKalb County, DuPage County, and the outskirts of Cook County. This urbanized region of the state contains well over 100 freshwater lakes that are accessible by boat. Although similar in many respects to the most Illinois fisheries, this region is markedly different due to the diversity of greater watersheds and lake types and overwhelming angling pressure. Increased lake fertility occurs due to the nutrients of the Fox and Des Plaines River watersheds, and agricultural run-off from farmland and local municipalities allows these waters to support more adult gamefish and panfish per acre.
The lakes and river systems of Northern Illinois are home to excellent populations of largemouth bass and assorted panfish species along with the potential for trophy sized fish. Additionally, many of our popular fisheries are stocked in order to sustain their populations – especially for the walleye, muskie and northern pike fisheries. If looking for multi-species fishing in a unique setting, Northern Illinois offers you the opportunity.
With hundreds of miles of river shoreline and clusters of smaller lakes to fish, Northern Illinois is a paradise for outdoor recreation in which travel distances are usually minimal and it won’t cost a fortune to fish them. Throughout the course of his fishing career, Pat Harrison has taken the time to intimately learn the surrounding lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, and be able to introduce anglers to its fisheries.
